The Memorial Day invitational
events alternate between Los Angeles and Sacramento clubs and
are 36-hole two day events. These events give Federation
club members a chance to visit new venues and to meet new
friends in a fun competitive atmosphere. This year Los
Angeles had two new courses, The Ike Course at Industry Hills
and Sierra Lakes Golf Club. Both courses were in excellent
shape and the weather was just great for the 70 plus players
from 12 of the 21 Federation Clubs.
In addition to the two 36-hole medal play rounds, practice rounds and Federation Team Match rounds were played on Friday. The host club also set up practice rounds on Wednesday and Thursday as well. The entry fee included dinner registration and poker at Brown Tsai’s house, a dinner at the Osaka Seafood Buffet and the Awards Dinner at Four Seasons Seafood Restaurant.
The winner’s photos show the different award levels. E.G., All Low Gross winners, Low Net winners, Field low gross, low net. The Low Gross and Low Net winners were awarded poker related cards and chips in a fine walnut casing. The Second Gross and Net winners received crystal like obelisk trophies.
The popular Sunday horse race saw people picking their horses where the two lowest nets per $2.00 bet can result in some great paybacks. This year, there was a tie for first place where Judy Lim and Laville Fendors picked the same horses, Alex Cu and Al Lim. Each went away with $147.50. The big winner, however, in a raffle drawing was none other than Chairman Steve Vines who went to the bank smiling with $500.00. In addition to this grand prize, the host club gave out close to $3,000.00 in raffle prizes.
The Friday Federation Team Match event had five teams competing for the championship. The Oakland team of Ray Jeung, Bill Wong, Al and Judy Lim was the winner with a two ball net of 120 followed by the Sacramento team of Greg Yip, Vince Kwan, Jessica Yee and Rocky Yee at 125. Oakland will get their name engraved on the new rotating match play champions plaque donated by the Federation.
