TUCSON INVITATIONAL – APRIL 2012

The Tucson Chinese Golf Club presented their Triennial Dr. Jim Wong Golf Tournament on April 11-14, 2012.  The legacy of this event spans back to 1990 when they hosted their first of eight invitational events.

Participants electronically received their welcome brochure which was also handed out upon registration at the Tuesday evening open house where drinks and a light dinner were served.  Actually, the light dinner was so good that many made it their evening dinner!

The tournament plan included four rounds of golf at courses in north Tucson and in Oro Valley with the center being the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Hotel on Oracle Road.  The field of 111 was divided into four groups to play the Omni Tucson National, The Preserve at Saddlebrook, Saddlebrook Ranch and the El Conquistador Country Club Courses.  However, what has never happened in the past seven events threw a wrench in the fourth round with rain that cancelled the tournament play at the four courses.  And snow! The good news is the 36-hole medal play was completed in the second and third rounds.

Although the fourth round was cancelled, the brochure provided many local activities that saw participants heading off to the Pima Air Museum, the Titan Missile Site, the Biosphere, the Desert Museum, the Saguaro National Park, or some even played golf in spite of the rain that did let up later in the morning.

The very efficient committee selected by President Danny Wong and Tournament Chairman Don Gin was instrumental in another highly successful event which included a nice Mexican buffet dinner at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center.  A terrific Western BBQ dinner at the hotel’s Last Territory Room where the traditional Nambe trophies were awarded the lucky winners.  During the awards, Danny announced their plans for the next triennial event in April 2015.  The results below include the first round Team Scramble winners for each of the five flights and the 36-hole medal play winners.

Many thanks for the tremendous effort put forth by the host club and the continuation of the Dr. Jim Wong legacy into 2015!
