Stroke Play

Quick Fact

The competitor who plays the stipulated round or rounds in the fewest strokes is the winner.

Two players who play in the same group in an individual stroke play format are "fellow-competitors", not "playing partners."

Rule 3-2.Failure to Hole Out

Q: Gayle and Frank are on the 8th hole and Gayle's ball lies two inches from the hole. Frank says to her, "That's good, let's go to #9." Gayle picks her ball up and heads to the next tee.

Is this permissible?

A: No. All competitors must hole out on every hole in stroke play. If Gayle does not correct her error before playing a stroke from the next teeing ground (or, in the case of the last hole of the round, before leaving the putting green), then she will be disqualified.

NOTE: We are very generous in giving people a GIMME when they have a perfectly missable 12" putt! Can't do this in tournaments!!

We encourage members to play by the official rules of golf as developed by the USGA and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
