Rule of the Week

From USGA Members Program 8/22/03
Rule 22
Ball Interfering with or Assisting Play

Etiquette Tip

Invite faster groups to play through.

Any player may:

a. Lift his/her ball if he/she considers that the ball might assist any other player or

b. Have any other ball lifted if he/she considers that the ball might interfere with his/her play or assist the play of any other player.

But this may not be done while another ball is in motion. In stroke play, a player required to lift his ball may play first rather than lift. A ball lifted under the Rule shall be replaced.

Penalty for Breach of Rule:

Match play &endash; loss of hole

Stroke play &endash; two strokes

Did you know... If you lift your ball under this Rule, you can not clean it; however, you may re-orient the ball when replacing it so that mud or other materials adhering to the ball will not interfere with the club when making a stroke.

We encourage members to play by the official rules of golf as developed by the USGA and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
