Project PHYSLab II is a three-week computer interfacing
workshop for physics teachers working at the high school level. The
2000 workshop will operate only in Portland, Oregon. This workshop is
funded by the National Science Foundation, The M. J. Murdock
Charitable Trust, Tektronix Foundation, and The Catlin Gabel
School.
Project PHYSLab II provides the following:
- A minimum of 50 ready-to-use computer interfacing physics
experiments (more like 75-80)
- Hands-on experience with Macintosh and Windows computers
- Working knowledge of a wide variety of computer interfacing
probes (light, motion, force, sound, acceleration, temperature,
B-field, radiation and pressure)
- Instruction in CBL and graphing calculator use and
programming
- Spreadsheets and other graphing software instruction for
laboratory data analysis
- Opportunity to work with the Neel Beard low-cost digital timer
and associated equipment
- Internet instruction and full access to the Internet while at
the workshop
- Opportunity to investigate a variety of physics software
- High quality training with experienced instructors
- Stipend of $900
- Graduate credit is available
- Lodging, food, and travel allowance
- Quality time with other interesting physics teachers
Requirements:
- Have a teaching position for the 1999-2000 school year and be
teaching at least one section of physics
- Be willing to give two workshops or presentations to other
physics teachers at a local or national meeting
- Have an Internet account and be an active user
- Maintain contact through the Internet with instructors and
other participants after completing workshop
- Raise $500 for a matching grant for the purchase of computer
interfacing probes and associated lab equipment
- Complete the application process
